Karlsruhe, 2009/02/11: At this year´s CeBIT trade fair, ontoprise GmbH, a leading provider of semantic technologies and applications, will show the most recently developed SemanticMiner and its integration into SharePoint at the Microsoft booth (hall 4, stand A26). This is the first joint product development resulting from the strategic cooperation between Microsoft, CRG Information Services and ontoprise. The SemanticMiner can be integrated into Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) and allows for a fast, intuitive, and unerring search based on semantic technologies and thus allows for the highly effective retrieval and maintenance of knowledge within an organization. The software’s innovative features and benefits in combination with SharePoint will be demonstrated at the Microsoft stand based on sample cases. As a result of the cooperation with Microsoft and CRG, additional add-ons for SharePoint are planned to be released including a semantic Wiki and the integration of the semantic expert shell system SemanticGuide.

SemanticMiner provides SharePoint users with long-time proven features of the settled ontoprise solution including a unique, dynamic navigation and context-sensitive semantic search. Thus SharePoint users will be enabled to extract fast and easily relevant know-how out of the mass of information which is available today all over the enterprises. Users get information in their contexts and can easily optimize the results with the help of semantic filters.

Filtering is done by means of semantic categories generated dynamically from the knowledge model to distinguish the search results. The search functionalities supported by the SharePoint version of SemanticMiner are complemented by features such as moderated search (suggesting similar or relevant terms out of the knowledge model and navigating through it), auto-suggest (displaying matching search suggestions at the users’ fingertips), typo correction, and attribute search.

The knowledge model (ontology) can easily be created in OntoStudio. The integration within SharePoint enables direct deploying of the model out of OntoStudio eliminating time-consuming format conversions or tedious creation of object models in SharePoint. Based on the schema that has been defined in OntoStudio new knowledge objects can be created, linked with existing objects and their attributes can be specified while the user interface changes dynamically depending on the structure defined in the knowledge model.

Additional important features of SemanticMiner for SharePoint include:

  • Searching across heterogeneous data sources including document storage and databases (i.e. Oracle, DB2 etc.) externally connected to SharePoint
  • Searching across applications and knowledge objects within SharePoint (i.e. people, products etc.)
  • Navigating in the knowledge model and subsequent import of search terms
  • Displaying object details in the search result
  • Different semantic Web parts (semantic browsing, semantic multi-category filter, semantic search results)
  • Semantic search center
  • AJaX user interface

Based on the knowledge model each SharePoint user is thus enabled to access relevant enterprise information easily and intuitively independent of the user’s field of activity or the location of the information.

The product exhibited at CeBIT is the first result of the collaboration work between ontoprise, CRG, and Microsoft. The cooperation enables users to extend existing or new Microsoft SharePoint Server installations with semantic technologies for easier and therefore faster information access resulting into a higher customer value and opening up new significant growth paths for the contributing partners.
